Tailoring & Stitching Charges in Delhi NCR & Bangalore

Tailoring splits into alterations (changing something you own) and stitching (making something new), and they price on completely different logic.

Alterations across India run from about ₹200 for simple hemming to ₹3,000 for full suit work. Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru all sit 15 to 25% above smaller cities, reflecting rent and labour costs.

New stitching starts lower than people expect: blouses from around ₹300, and salwar suits from around ₹450. A Western two-piece suit made properly is a different category altogether and costs many times that.

Heavily embroidered or designer garments cost more to alter, because the work has to be undone and redone around the embellishment.

💰 Why altering a jacket costs more than stitching a blouse

It looks backwards until you think about the work.

A new blouse is cut from flat fabric to your measurements. The tailor controls everything from the start.

Altering a jacket means unpicking finished construction, working around lining, canvas and shoulder structure, adjusting several panels so they still hang together, and reassembling it without leaving evidence. Structured garments are difficult to alter well, which is why ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 is a fair price rather than a markup.

The practical consequence: for a structured garment that fits badly in more than one place, having it made may cost less than fixing it. Ask the tailor which makes sense before committing to alterations on a jacket that's wrong in the shoulders, since shoulders are the one thing that genuinely cannot be fixed cheaply.

Buy for the shoulders and alter everything else. That's the rule that saves the most money in tailoring.

🔍 Getting a fit right first time

Most tailoring disappointment is a communication problem, not a skill problem.

1. Bring a garment that already fits well and ask them to match it. This is far more reliable than describing what you want, and more reliable than measurements alone.
2. Say how you want it to fit, not just the measurement. "Loose through the waist" and "fitted at the waist" produce different garments from identical numbers.
3. Wear the right undergarments to the measurement. For blouses and fitted wear this genuinely changes the fit.
4. Bring the shoes you'll wear for anything where length matters. Hemming to the wrong heel height is the most common redo.
5. Ask for a fitting round. For anything expensive or structured, one intermediate try-on catches problems while they're still fixable.
6. Agree the delivery date, and a buffer. Wedding-season tailors run late. If you need it for a date, say the date is a week earlier.
7. Photograph the design you want rather than describing it.

Fabric, and who buys it

For new stitching, the fabric is usually yours to supply, and the stitching charge is labour only.

• Ask how much fabric to buy before buying it. Requirements vary with your size, the design, and the fabric width. Buying short is the most common and most annoying error, since dye lots differ between purchases.
• Buy a little extra for anything fitted, so there's seam allowance to let out later.
• Pre-wash fabrics that shrink, particularly cotton, before stitching. A perfectly fitted cotton kurta that shrinks in the first wash is a wasted garment.
• Ask about lining and whether it's included or extra.

Silk work is a genuine local strength. Kanjeevaram and silk saree blouse stitching, including the particular skills silk demands, is far better represented here than in NCR, and worth seeking specifically rather than taking to a general tailor. Silk is unforgiving of a mistake, and an experienced hand shows.

Humidity affects fabric behaviour, which matters for anything fitted. Cotton and linen move more here than in dry Delhi, so pre-washing before stitching is worth doing rather than skipping.

Why is altering a suit so expensive? Because structured garments have to be unpicked and rebuilt around lining and internal construction, then reassembled invisibly. It is genuinely skilled work, unlike hemming a straight seam.

Can any garment be altered to fit? Most things, within limits. Waist, length and sleeves are usually adjustable. Shoulders on a structured jacket are not, practically speaking. If the shoulders are wrong, the garment is wrong.
